Vacation Bible School Fun by Carla Vied

If you close your eyes and someone says “Vacation Bible School” what do you see and hear?  Do you think of
a vacation in some exotic place, or maybe stories from the Bible told in really different ways, or does the word
“school” makes you think of classes? Cookies, Kool-aid, crafts, games, friends, fun and really cool music can
also remind you of Vacation Bible School.  But why should you as a parent want your child to go to VBS?  Let’s
think of some of the reasons.

Fun – What child do you know doesn’t want to have fun? Each year most churches will plan their Vacation
Bible School around an exciting theme. While the theme is not the most important part of VBS, it is the vehicle
that is used to teach children the most exciting thing they will ever know – that Jesus loves them and the He
wants to have a personal relationship with them.

Kid-friendly – Every child learns differently. By planning age-appropriate activities that appeal to children,
leaders can teach in a way that each child can understand. Young children learn best through their play, so
activities are planned that allow the Bible story to be presented many different ways. Older children are much
more social and the group activities allow them to be with their friends and still be learning. Other ways that
children learn are used. Some children learn best through music, some learn best when they are moving and
some kids learn best when they can talk about the things they have heard. Music, games and small groups of
friends allow each child to hear the relevant Bible study that will allow them to experience and respond to the
gospel message.

Friends – Every child and parent looks forward to summer vacation. But soon children begin to get bored.
They miss their friends from school. Vacation Bible School allows them to come back together with their friends
to learn. It also allows children to meet and make new friends. Life-long friendships can be started when
children spend five days together. Now your child has a new list of friends they can call for the rest of the
summer!
All of these reasons are important, but the most important reason to send your child to Vacation Bible School
this summer is so that they can know and respond to Jesus Christ when the Holy Spirit begins to speak. That
can come at different ages for different children but the concentrated Bible study that happens during VBS
can only help them to grow to become more like Jesus.
