Apostle Build
Apostles' Build is an interdenominational, ecumenical ministry of churches
in the community coming together to build a house for someone qualified
through Habitat for Humanity. It is a good work done for others in the name
of Christ. It is a witness to a God who is greater than all of us. And, it
is a sign and expression of our unity in Christ who calls us to do this.
How it works. Churches volunteer and are recruited to become part of the
Apostles' Build Team. Each church contributes money to help pay for the
cost of the house. Anywhere from $500 to $5,000 depending on ability.
Smaller churches are not excluded. The first couple of weeks of the project
and the last week are usually called Ecumenical weeks because many workers
are needed and each church has two-three people working on big projects. An
early big project is putting up all the walls. It takes many people working
together. Also, putting up the trusses for the roof. In later weeks, parts
of the project are broken down by weeks and individual churches or churches
working in pairs do the work, like interior painting, putting in kitchen
cabinets and appliances, etc. Licensed professionals do the electrical and
plumbing work and occasionally some other things that need to be done.
The project begins with a Foundation Blessing when the new soon-to-be
homeowners and representatives from the Apostles' Build churches meet on a
Sunday after the foundation and slab have been poured to ask God's blessings
on the family and the work that will be done on the house.
At the end, there is a house dedication after the family has moved in.
Each new homeowner is required to put in over 300 hours of sweat equity
working on Habitat houses and then working on their own with the team that
is building their house. The home owner will buy and pay a mortgage note
for the house. There are feelings of pride and accomplishment by the new
homeowners, as well as the people from the churches who helped provide
volunteer labor to make this home affordable and to help someone have their
own home.
